Welcome to my home page. I’m a scholar with interdisciplinary interests in film studies, American literature, American cultural and intellectual history in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, and American studies. I retired from teaching after more than 40 years at UT: most of the classes I taught related to the relationship between film and American culture. I continue to watch, read about, and write on the art and cultural engagement of the cinema.
My last long book project was a complete edition of James Agee’s movie reviews and essays, part of the University of Tennessee Press ongoing project of the complete works of the Knoxville-born author. Click the “Recent Work” button for more on that.
I grew up in Minnesota, and in the picture below, the poster to the right and above my head is of another person with Minnesota roots. Can you guess who he is? Hint: he’s been awarded a Nobel Prize, and he isn’t Sinclair Lewis.
